sometimes, to learn new skills and to successfully apply them. But
we have no choice. We started the year under the vision of “Campus
of Tomorrow”, to develop and foster 21st century skills. We aim to
create an academic environment that prepares our students for a
dynamic professional world, by cultivating 21st century skills as the
key to their future success beyond their academic experience. This
vision applies not only to our students, but to us as well. Us as the
Instructional Development Center, and us as well as faculty. We are
all in an ongoing process of learning and developing.
Learning and Developing on the Move
The arena of online teaching and learning is brimming with information.
As soon as COVID-19 spread out, we were flooded with a wealth of
digital tools, tutorials, recommendations, tips and methodologies
for integrating online tools meaningfully into remote learning. It’s
fascinating and overwhelming all at once. What technologies should
we adopt, to what extent, when and how. I believe that we need to
approach our transition to online learning as an ongoing process of
learning and adapting to the contextual attributes of our teaching
situation. There is no one right way to teach. A good teaching
method is derived from many variables including the personality
of the lecturer, course content, student mix, study space and more.
Similarly, no single method or tool is right for distant learning or online
learning and in any case, it is also impossible to learn, internalize and
apply or even evaluate the effectiveness of all the methods together.
I believe it’s achieved through preference and experience. Adopt
one tool at a time, one methodology and experiment. Don’t try to
include everything. Select and learn while on the move, gradually,
while constantly reflecting on the experience. Continue to work
with technologies and methodologies that suit you, and gradually
experiment with new technologies. Select the appropriate timing,
path and dosage for incorporating new tools, contingent on lecturer
personality, student makeup, course content and everything else.
Most importantly, seek to balance between old and new, between
means and content.
